See You on the Moon: Songs for Kids of All Ages
[Paper Bag; 2006]
Grade: B

It’s safe to get rid of the Raffi or Kids Pop DC’s for those car rides
home with the kids. Some prominent artists from the Indie music realm have
come together to make an interesting concept album that “…will appeal to
kids and grown-ups alike.” See You on the Moon was put together by Paper
Bag Records, an independent record label out of Canada. It features
familiar names from all about the Indie music spectrum: Alan Sparhawk of
Low, Kid Koala, Broken Social Scene, and Sufjan Stevens to name a few.
While I haven’t tested this theory, I do believe that this album can be
enjoyed by the young and old alike. Out of the 17 total tracks, most stay
up beat and use catchy melodies to keep things amusing for children,
exceptions including a few lullabies and the instrumental tracks by
Montag. Adults should stay entertained by the eclectic nature of the songs
and sheer variety of the mix.
This album is worth checking out if you like this genre of music, even if
you don’t have any children of your own. Broken Social Scene’s rendition
of “Puff the Magic Dragon” and the title track, “See You on the Moon”, by
The Great Lake Swimmers are a few of the gems that stuck out at first
glance. I will admit that, although, some of the songs are fun and poppy,
a few of them could really drive you crazy after listening for an extended
period of time; most notably “Under The Bed” by The Fembots and Apostle of
Hustle’s “24 Robbers”. In the end it’s probably still more adult friendly
than whatever those silly children are listening too. See you on the moon!
